Press Release
New Chairman for the MTHR Research Programme
Professor Lawrie Challis, OBE, Emeritus Professor of Physics at
Nottingham University, will succeed Sir William Stewart, FRS, as
Chairman of the MTHR Programme Management Committee. Professor
Challis is currently Vice-chairman of the Programme Management
Committee and was formerly Vice-chairman of the Stewart Inquiry
into Mobile Phones and Health.
The present Chairman of the Programme Management Committee of
the MTHR, Sir William Stewart, announced today that he was stepping
down to devote more time to his new role as Shadow Chairman of
the Government’s proposed Health Protection Agency.
Professor Challis said of his new role:
“This is an important and exciting research programme and
we are all extremely grateful to Bill Stewart for getting the programme
established so effectively. It is a great honour and privilege
to follow in his footsteps.”
Sir William Stewart, outgoing Chairman, commented:
“I was recently appointed Shadow Chairman of the proposed
Health Protection Agency and I must devote a major part of my time
and effort into the setting up of this hugely important new agency.
I shall be sorry to step down because the MTHR is a good Committee.
However I have worked well with Lawrie Challis for many years and
am very pleased that the MTHR will be in his safe and independent
hands.”
